M*A*S*H 1×2 “To Market, To Market”

November 27th, 2007 · 1 Comment

I know “M*A*S*H” is a sitcom, but doesn’t that genre suggest some comedy? In this episode, Hawkeye and Trapper need some hydrocortisone after black marketeers have taken the unit’s supply. And Henry has just gotten a new antique desk. Hijinks ensue.

There’s no texture to the episode, nothing interesting. There’s even wacky music.

It goes by in a snap of the fingers too–I was nineteen minutes in to the episode waiting for something to happen, so it obviously failed to follow whatever outline sitcoms follow. Burt Styler’s script is lame and I wonder if all the actors knew how lame it was coming across.

Again, Hawkeye and Trapper are scoundrels looking out for the common good (the medical supplies), but they’re only scoundrels because they identify themselves as such.

The episode feels more like a “M*A*S*H” rip-off show… it’s real disappointing.

There’s also very little in the way of cause and effect. Nobody apparently makes any effort to find who stole the desk, even when they see it taken by one of their own helicopters.

And what was that about Hawkeye and Trapper scheming to outwit the black marketeers at the beginning? Now that might have been a more entertaining story.
