M*A*S*H 1×10 “I Hate a Mystery”

The episode’s not terrible, but the resolution is bad. It’s such a lame ending–after a whole episode of things getting stolen, everything gets wiped clean by the thief’s motives… I remembered who did it, but I figured it would be his or her last episode… but apparently not.

It’s also really broad in the humor. Hawkeye as the detective for the last scene, when the majority of the episode is about Henry’s pursuit of the culprit, doesn’t work. It’s not a Hawkeye episode, it’s an episode about Hawkeye. The gags (Henry’s search, Radar tailing Hawkeye) are funny enough–and, given this episode is Spearchucker’s second-to-last, I’m really missing him–but the characters aren’t acting in believable ways.

The worst kind of episode is one where the writer forces the characters to fit the story, which is a terrible way for a television episode to go… the situation is funny because of how the characters respond to it.

It’s a very genial episode though, but probably the first where it seems like the laugh track would be necessary (just to clue the viewer in to the amusing parts).

It’s another episode that makes you think you’re watching the Hawkeye Pierce Show. Hawkeye has to be the one to solve the mystery because he always has to be the hero.

How long do we have to go before anyone else gets a look in?
