I think this episode might have been the only non-revival movie episode of “The Rockford Files” I’ve seen. It features a great guest spot from James Woods, a nicely paced mystery and a decent romantic foil for Jim.
The problem? Maybe none. Maybe this episode is indicative of the limitations of the private investigator-centered television drama. It’s got a nice open, a nice build-up–though there are some short cuts in Rockford’s casework… the viewer gets left out of quite a bit.
There are also some dangling plot points and some disappearing characters… but the episode does establish a wonderful mood. It’s an immediately familiar, if TV land setting.
And it’s amazing how they got a car chase into it. I didn’t think it would have been possible.
